What Are You Depending On?

In the Bible we learn of a woman, Mary of Bethany, a follower of Jesus. Two things she is known for are her love of sitting at Jesus’ feet and learning from Him, and for anointing Jesus’ head and feet with perfume. The anointing appears in all four gospels, and when we piece the event together we find that she took some very costly perfume, a perfume worth more than a years’ wages, and poured it out on Jesus. Stop for a minute and think about that. Think about your yearly wage. For most of us, that’s a lot of money. This perfume was probably Mary’s savings, her security in the event of financial downturns. She gave it all to Jesus, no getting it back. The fact that she gave it as she did proves that it really wasn’t her security. Those times of sitting at Jesus’ feet had taught her that He was her security, and so she was able to give this costly gift to Him.

If you are a child of God, do you recognize that He is the one who sustains you? Have you been spending time sitting at His feet (listening to what He has spoken in the Bible) so that you have the same assurance that Mary did? God really is your security. Read the familiar Psalm 23 with new eyes. See how God takes care of His children, His sheep. Depend on God. He does not fluctuate with the market. He is sovereign God, and nothing can stop Him. And He loves you. He has promised to care for you. Rest in that assurance.
